Ep 48 - Trump’s Mystery Question: What Pennsylvania Voters Should Know About His Pick for Governor
- Mar 17
- 4 min read
Pennsylvania politics has a new mystery — and it starts with a question.
According to reporting from WITF, the Republican candidate for governor, Stacy Garrity, says Donald Trump asked her one specific question before deciding whether to endorse her campaign.
She answered the question.
Trump endorsed her. Twenty minutes later.
Simple enough — except for one detail.
Garrity refuses to say what the question was.

Reporters have asked repeatedly, and each time Garrity confirms that the question exists but declines to reveal it. The result is one of the stranger political subplots in Pennsylvania’s upcoming governor’s race: apparently there is a question you must answer correctly to receive Trump’s endorsement, but voters are not allowed to know what it is.
That raises a bigger question for Pennsylvania voters: who exactly is Stacy Garrity, and what does Trump’s endorsement mean for the race?
Who Is Stacy Garrity?
Garrity is currently serving as Pennsylvania’s state treasurer, a statewide office responsible for managing the state’s investments and financial programs such as unclaimed property. She was elected to that position in 2020.
Before entering politics, Garrity spent more than three decades in the U.S. Army Reserve and eventually retired with the rank of colonel. She served in Iraq and received a Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service. After her military career, she worked in banking and business leadership roles before launching her political career.
In many ways, her résumé fits a familiar American political template: military service, private-sector experience, and then a move into elected office.
Politically, Garrity is firmly aligned with the Trump wing of the Republican Party. She has praised Trump’s presidency and has described him as “the greatest president of my lifetime,” a statement that underscores her positioning within the MAGA movement.
That alignment helps explain why Trump’s endorsement matters so much.
The Power of Trump’s Endorsement
In modern Republican primaries, Trump’s backing carries enormous influence. For many Republican voters, his endorsement serves as a signal of which candidate best represents the movement he built.
It can also shape the entire primary field. A Trump endorsement often discourages other candidates from entering the race or competing directly for the same base of voters.
In Pennsylvania, that dynamic is especially important because the Republican Party has experienced internal divisions in recent years.
One faction represents more traditional conservative politics focused on taxes, business policy, and conventional campaign strategies.
Another faction is more closely aligned with Trump’s populist approach to politics.
A third faction is represented by figures such as Doug Mastriano, the Republican nominee for governor in 2022.
Mastriano ran an intensely ideological campaign that leaned heavily on election conspiracy theories and religious rhetoric. His candidacy energized parts of the Republican base but ultimately ended in a decisive defeat. Democratic candidate Josh Shapiro won the general election by roughly fifteen points. That loss sparked an ongoing debate inside the Pennsylvania GOP about what kind of candidate can win statewide elections. Is the path forward a hard-line ideological campaign, or a Trump-aligned candidate with broader appeal?
Garrity appears to be positioning herself as the latter.
Policy Positions and Controversies
On policy issues, Garrity’s positions largely align with mainstream conservative priorities in today’s Republican Party.
She has described herself as “100 percent pro-life,” supporting restrictions on abortion access.
She has supported policies limiting transgender athletes’ participation in girls’ sports.
Her economic messaging emphasizes fiscal conservatism, reducing government waste, and promoting business-friendly policies.
Like many Republican politicians aligned with Trump, Garrity also supported efforts to investigate the results of the 2020 presidential election in Pennsylvania. Critics argue that these efforts contributed to election misinformation narratives, while supporters say examining election procedures helps maintain public confidence in the system.
Another minor controversy during her 2020 campaign involved questions about how her Bronze Star Medal was described in campaign messaging. The Bronze Star can be awarded either for valor in combat or for meritorious service in a combat zone. Garrity’s award was for meritorious service, and her campaign denied intentionally misrepresenting the distinction.
The Question Voters Don’t Know
Ultimately, the most unusual part of Garrity’s endorsement story remains the unanswered question.
What exactly did Trump ask her before offering his support?
Perhaps the question was simple — a discussion of campaign strategy or policy priorities. Or perhaps it involved political alignment within the party.
For now, the public doesn’t know.
But the fact that the question exists — and that voters are not allowed to hear it — has added an intriguing layer to Pennsylvania’s next governor’s race.
As the campaign unfolds, voters will be watching closely to see not only what Garrity stands for, but also how the influence of Trump continues to shape Republican politics in Pennsylvania.
